'Show Me I.D - Be Age Ok’ Awareness Week Launched For Retailers

The second annual 'Show Me I.D - Be Age Ok’ Awareness Week was launched for retailers yesterday (Monday), with the unveiling of smartphone and tablet accessible online training at www.showmeid.ie.

Using the technology, retailers will be able to ensure staff to keep up-to-date on how best to ensure that minors do not have access to age-restricted products, through using their smartphones and tablets to complete the training. Certificates of completion will be available to all staff on completion of the programme.

"The Show Me I.D – Be Age Ok campaign provides retailers with an excellent training opportunity to ensure that their staff know exactly what they can and cannot sell to minors and how to deal with difficult situations arising from the non sale of age-restricted products," said David Fitzsimons, Chief Executive Officer, Retail Excellence Ireland. "This protects minors but also retailers and their staff.”

The 2013 Awareness Week is supported by a poster campaign which will appear in over 1,200 retail outlets around Ireland. To raise awareness of this initiative amongst retailers, a nationwide media campaign will also be rolled out.

‘Show Me I.D – Be Age Ok’ was first launched in July 2010 and is supported by a number of retail groups, including Retail Excellence Ireland, the Convenience Stores and Newsagents Association (CSNA), the representative organisation for independent family grocers (RGDATA), the National Federation of Retail Newsagents (NFRN) and the National Off-Licence Association (NOFFLA).
