TOMRA Releases New Compact Reverse Vending Machine For Irish Retailers

TOMRA has today announced the launch of its latest compact reverse vending machine (RVM) in Ireland.

The TOMRA B5 Combi is the latest addition to the RVM-maker’s line of machines.

It takes up just 0.8 square metres of retail space.

The Deposit Return Scheme

Since the Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) was introduced in Ireland last month, TOMRA aims to offer a compact and efficient recycling solution to retailers.

The DRS applies a small deposit to plastic bottles and aluminium cans. The deposit is then reimbursed when the containers are returned to a designated return point.

Consumers can reclaim the deposit either in cash or as a voucher to offset their shopping.

RVMs offer a convenient way for customers to deposit bottles, and they save on staff time and resources.

According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Ireland produces over 1.2 million tonnes of plastic waste each year.

Recycling rates for cardboard and glass are high in Ireland, at 84% and 73%, respectively. However, only 28% of plastic waste was properly recycled in 2021.

The new RVM offers easy installation and a user-friendly touch screen functionality, to encourage use.

The machine can separate cans and bottles into different bins or mix them, depending on the needs of the business.

‘Transform Recycling’

Speaking about the launch of the new machine, the head of Irish sales at TOMRA, Peter Whelan, said, “This latest addition to our renowned fleet of reverse vending machines enables Irish consumers to efficiently collect containers, preventing them from ending up in streets or landfills.

“With its user-friendly interface, seamless functionality and space-saving design, TOMRA B5 Combi simplifies recycling for both retailers and shoppers.”

Truls Haug, managing director at TOMRA collection UK and Ireland, welcomed the development.

Haug said, “TOMRA Collection has consistently demonstrated its capacity to evolve and pioneer, delivering tailored solutions that meet our customers’ requirements.

He concluded, “Our goal is to transform recycling across a broader spectrum of stores that are eager to embark on their DRS journey.”

Founded in 1972, TOMRA’s RVMs span over 60 markets globally. They collectively enable the recycling of over 45 million drink containers annually.
