Weekly Round-Up ... 11 October 2022

Ukrainian farmers have completed their 2022 wheat and barley harvests, threshing 19.2 million and 5.5 million tonnes, respectively, the agriculture ministry has announced. Farmers harvested 4.7 million hectares of wheat, and the yield averaged 4.1 tonnes per hectare, the ministry noted in a report. The farmers harvested 1.6 million hectares of barley, with an average yield of 3.48 tonnes per hectare, reports Reuters. In 2021, Ukraine harvested 32.2 million tonnes of wheat and 9.4 million tonnes of barley. The ministry has noted that a fall in the output in 2022 was caused by hostilities in the country’s eastern, northern and southern regions.

Greece’s annual consumer inflation accelerated to 12.0% in September, from 11.4% the previous month, remaining at its highest level in nearly three decades, data showed. Surging costs for energy, housing, transportation and food were the main factors underpinning the figures, statistics service ELSTAT noted. Month-on-month consumer inflation rose by 2.9%. Greece’s annual EU-harmonised inflation accelerated to 12.1% in September, from 11.2% in August, continuing to squeeze disposable incomes, reports Reuters.

Wholesaler Makro Portugal has launched a new online sales platform with more than 20,000 non-food products, in an attempt to reach more customers. The platform includes categories such as kitchen equipment, outdoor items, cleaning products, disposable items, office supplies, TV sets and multimedia, among others, reports ESMmagazine.com. New users need to create a digital account on the new platform, while existing Makro clients can access it with the same credentials already used in the Makro companion app. The Makro Marketplace includes products already sold by the wholesaler, with a focus on private-label brands – Metro Professional, Sigma, Tarrington House and Aro – and reference brands for the HoReCa sector, in addition to products from partners/resellers, who will manage and ship their stock directly.
