Lidl Belgium and Luxembourg has named Matúš Gála as its new chief executive officer, effective from 1 May. Gála has been a part of Lidl for the past 14 years, including five years as chief executive officer of Lidl Slovakia. Gála joined the retail group in 2008, as a regional manager at Lidl Slovakia, after studying at the Faculty of Economics and Management at the University of Slovakia. In 2015, he took on the role of sales director at Lidl Lithuania. Gála said, “Over the past eight years, Lidl has evolved in Belgium and Luxembourg, under the leadership of my colleague Boudewijn van den Brand, into a real smart discounter that has enjoyed strong growth in the market.”

Italian artisanal fresh-pasta producer Pastificio Fontaneto will serve its products in new, fully compostable and recyclable packaging. The packaging has been designed by Novamont, Gualapack, Ilip, and Gruppo Poligrafico Tiberino – a group of companies from the green-chemistry and plastic-processing sectors. The project envisages replacing traditional plastic/multilayer packaging with a certified industrially compostable pack, consisting of a thermoformed tray, heat-sealed film, and a compostable label. The end result is the first 100% compostable and biodegradable fresh-pasta pack – TÜV certified and made from Mater-Bi, a material with a high content of renewable raw materials.

Dublin Airport and SSP have announced the opening of the Whiskey Bread Bar and Kitchen in Terminal 2, which showcases the products of Teeling Whiskey and McCloskey’s Bakery. The unit is located in Terminal 2’s US Preclearance area and caters to all US-bound passengers. In addition to a range of Teeling whiskeys, the bar features a wide variety of Irish and international whiskeys on the menu. An online whiskey quiz helps customers navigate the whiskey selection and gives them a unique opportunity to create their own whiskey flight. These flights also come with individual tasting notes, for customers to take away with them as a souvenir of their visit.
