Tesco Introduces Sweeter Variety Of Cabbage

A sweeter variety of home-grown cabbage is being trialled by British supermarket Tesco.

The new variety, known as Sweet Summer Cabbage, is grown in Lincolnshire and has been naturally developed to regenerate interest in the vegetable.

According to the grocery retailer, it has a light, sweeter and fresher taste than other cabbage varieties and is aimed at people who make their own salads and coleslaws.

Speaking on the new variety of cabbage, Luke Shutler, Tesco vegetable buyer, said, "In recent years, many greens have not only shed their ‘difficult’ image, but have been reappraised as superfoods because of their great nutritional value."

Thanks to foodie culture and a greater awareness of what we eat, we have seen greens such as spinach and sprouts become more popular, he said.

"Unfortunately, that has not happened with cabbage yet, and we think that demand is being held back because of a poor image that goes back to memories of school dinners and cabbage that was boiled to within an inch of its life," he said.

The supermarket worked with UK producer TH Clements on the sweet variety of cabbage.

Recent UK data from Kantar revealed that demand for cabbage has fallen by 6 per cent in the last two years. Summer Sweet Cabbage is now available in 250 Tesco stores.
