2018 Retail Sales For April Up Almost 5% Compared To 2017 Results

Retail volume sales increased by 4.8% in April compared to the same period last year, and monthly sales also grew by 1.5%.

If Motor Trades are excluded, there was an increase of 1.0% in the volume of retail sales and a year-to-year increase of 3.8% in the annual figure.

These are the latest figures from the CSO which report that value sales also rose by 6.8% in April with an annual increase of 3.8%. These figures, excluding motor trades, are 1% and 1.8% respectively.

The Food, beverage and Tobacco category saw a 2.5% increase for the month and a 2% annual increase in value sales, while volume sales increase 3.6% on the month and 3.7% year-to-year.

Retail sales as a whole have enjoyed a strong start to 2018, which were since wiped away during the last week of February as Storm Emma disrupted trading and forced closures over four key trading days.
