Checkout at 40: A Trader’s Dream (December 1976)

This year, Checkout commemorates its 40th anniversary under its current ownership, and with this in mind, every week, Retail Intelligence is going to ‘reel in the years’ and publish a story from our extensive archives. As our final dip into the archive before 2016, we look back at a special supplement produced for Musgrave in December 1976 and Checkout's review of its Clondalkin Cash & Carry. Here's to another 40 years!

A Trader’s Dream

Musgrave presently operates three giant Cash & Carrys, in Dublin, Limerick and Cork, with a second Dublin operation being built at the moment. The writer was asked to visit their premises at Robinhood Road, Clondalkin, and to describe his impression of what is, without doubt, the foremost Cash & Carry in Ireland.

Musgrave is famous for its scope, range of products and is in fact the shopkeepers’ wholesale departmental store. Not withstanding their three-weekly mail shot reaching some 10,000 retailers, there are still a considerable number of potential customers who have as yet to make their first visit to the magnificent Cash & Carry at Clondalkin, Co. Dublin.

Musgrave is keen on prices, but so is every major Cash & Carry, or so they claim to be, and each points at the superb special offers which are run monthly to attract more traders to them rather than to their rivals. These are tools of the trade and differ only in attractiveness by the scope they give the switched-on trader an opportunity to make a quick profit or give a more attractive special offer to his own customers.

The real attraction of Musgrave is that it is possible to make one-stop stocking, with the built-in convenience of being able to make personal shopping as well without having to go into the city for the bits and pieces that break the heart of so many country traders coming for a day to Dublin.
