Aldi Earns Top Marks In Bord Bia Retail Audit

The Bord Bia Quality Assurance quarterly survey of fresh meat in Irish supermarkets has revealed that Aldi sells the highest proportion of fresh Irish meat labelled with the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark.

According to the discount retailer, Bord Bia’s Retail Audit found that 90% of Aldi’s fresh meat ranges displayed its Quality Assurance Mark, meaning Aldi had the highest ranking of the nine supermarkets and convenience store chains surveyed across Ireland.

The comprehensive in-store audit examines how many bacon, beef, burgers, chicken, cooked ham, duck, lamb, pork, rashers, sausages and turkey products carry the Bord Bia Quality Assurance Mark, it added.

'Independent, Third-Party Assurance'

The Mark is an independent, third-party assurance for customers that food products have been produced to the 'highest quality standards, and that Irish farmers, processors and packing houses have been independently audited'.

Welcoming the result, John Curtin, group buying director, Aldi commented, “At Aldi, we are committed to working with Irish farmers and producers and that’s why we offer very best of Bord Bia Quality Assured Irish meat in our 149 stores.

"We only source our fresh meat from farms in the Republic of Ireland that are certified under the Bord Bia Quality Assurance schemes,” he said.

Irish Supply Base

Aldi noted that it is committed to growing its Irish supply base and increasing the number of Irish products available in its stores.

Currently working with over 330 Irish food and drink producers, Aldi spent €1 billion with its Irish suppliers in 2021.

It has invested more than €3,000,000 in its Grow with Aldi supplier development programme since 2018, which offers up-and-coming artisan Irish food and drink producers the chance to have their products listed in Aldi’s 149 stores.
