Q4 Sees Grocery Industry Sales On The Up

According to the latest Retail Excellence Ireland and Grant Thornton Q4 Retail Productivity Review, produced in partnership with GfK, the grocery sector was one of the standout performers in the retail industry in Q4 2015 in terms of like for like sales.

According to the report, the sector posted a sales increase of 2.03% compared to the same period last year.

December was grocery's best month, with the sector recording like for like gains of 2.85%, the largest monthly increase in the grocery sector since May 2012. October saw an increase of 1.57%, while November was slightly quieter with a rise of 0.97%.

Commenting on the report, REI CEO David Fitzsimons said; "On a broader scale, figures across the general retail industry were quite encouraging, with like for like sales increasing by 5.69% for Q4 2015.

"It is clear that the Black Friday phenomenon is having a significant impact across many sectors and especially in Consumer Electronics, where there was strong growth across the quarter. However Black Friday led to a quieter October as consumers postpone spending, and a weaker post Christmas sales period.

"Overall it proved a reasonable quarter, but that said, growth rates are slowing marginally, which it is hoped is as a result of the inclement weather rather than other macro economic factors," he concluded.
