Steinhoff International has raised its bid for Dealz owner Poundland. The South African retailer increased the offer by 5 pence a share, bringing the value of Poundland from €693 million to €708 million. Dealz has 53 shops in Ireland and recently announced plans to open another 20.

Smurfit Kappa have won a trio of awards at the ‘Obal Roku’ packaging competition. The competition is designed to promote innovations and technologies in the Czech packaging market, and Smurfit Kappa were awarded prizes in the Electronic and Appliances, Automotive and Transport, and Point of Sale Displays categories.

Junior Chamber International Donegal will host the JCI Donegal Friendly Business Awards on August 29. The awards, which are nationally sponsored by Bank of Ireland, seeks to recognise the important role played by small businesses in the economy and local communities.

Almost 34,000 unsafe products were prevented from entering the Irish market last year, according to the recently formed Competition and Consumer Protection Commission. The Commission has just published its first report detailing actions taken during the period 31 October 2014 to 31 December 2015.

A “single issue” lobby group called the Dublin City Traders’ Alliance has formed to oppose the planned pedestrianisation of College Green. The group, comprised of local retailers and car-park owners, is concerned with Dublin City Council’s development plan for the area.

Tesco NI has announced that it will help sponsor the 2016 Farming Life and Danske Bank Awards. The awards celebrate those involved in the farming industry, and Tesco NI will sponsor the Arable/Horticulture Farmer of the Year category.

HK Dickeys has launched a new cooked chicken brand, Chook Chook. The Antrim based poultry business has developed Chook Chook to help grow sales in key markets including the Republic of Ireland. Chook Chook is targeted at retailers in particular.
