Did you know… Aldi has opened its 113th store in Ireland? The discounter opened its most recent store in The Elysian in Cork City Centre, making it the 18th Aldi store in Cork. The retailer also reopened its Longford store after conducting extensive refurbishing and extending the premises. The two stores together create 25 new jobs. Aldi is also set to open 10 new stores next year - six in Munster, which will create upwards of 250 jobs and bring the German discount retailer’s total number of stores close to 125.

Did you know… Minister for Business and Employment, Ged Nash TD has called on individuals from employer backgrounds and labour market experts to apply for membership of the new Low Pay Commission? The Commission is being established to advise the government on the appropriate rate of the National Minimum Wage. Commenting, Minister Nash said, “I want to see the minimum wage progressively increased where the economic circumstances, the demands of job creation and social conditions and requirements converge.  It represents a floor beneath which no working person should be allowed to fall.”

Did you know… The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) is hosting a small business start up seminar? The free, half day event will will outline the various information resources available from the FSAI, food safety training requirements, how to set up a food safety management system, labelling regulations and what is needed to do in the case of a product recall. A representative from the Environmental Health Service will detail how to register a food business and what to expect from an inspection. A new product development expert from Teagasc will outline what is involved in developing a new food product and a small food business owner will outline their recent experience in setting up a food business. The seminar takes place on 28 January, from 8-10 am at the Crowne Plaza Northwood, Northwood Park, Santry, Dublin 9. To register, visit www.fsai.ie 

Did you know… Northern Ireland-based Co Couture, a chocolatier, and Suki Teahouse, have won a silver medal in the World Final International Chocolate Awards for their milk chocolate bar with a Japanese Cherry Sencha infusion? The companies created the unique chocolate bar together, which was among 950 different products from around in the world in the annual competition. Deirdre McCanny, owner of Co Couture, said the chocolate bar has added to Co Couture's growing international ranking products. She said, "The combination of this fine chocolate and Suki Tea's Japanese Cherry Sencha blend has given this bar the filling needed to secure silver in this highly competitive category.” The International Chocolate Awards is an independent competition recognising excellence in fine chocolate making and in the products made with fine chocolate.

Did you know… SuperValu has teamed up with 2FM to give people the chance to win shopping vouchers this week? The retailer has already given away €1,000 of vouchers via the Breakfast Republic show on Monday during the show’s game ‘Greed’, whereby listeners must identify a song in one, three or five seconds.

Did you know… TWN Select has been selected as agents for a retail premises leased to Aldi on Parnell Street, Dublin 1? The 13,000 square foot property has an asking price of €5.75 million, with a guaranteed lease by Aldi’s parent company. The lease has an unexpired term of 8.75 years, with current rent of €386,500 per annum with rent reviews of upwards only. This breaks rent down to about €29 a square foot. TVM Selling Agent, Sean O’Neill, said that the contracts are available and a sale will likely be completed before the end of the year to avail of the Capital Gains Tax exemption.

Did you know… The Food Safety Authority (FSAI) has advised consumers not to eat any Belmont Organic Venison products that may have recently been purchased? The products were cut, minced and wrapped in an unapproved establishment deemed unsuitable and unhygienic for food production purposes. These products include all those that were sold, including those at the National Crafts and Design Fair in the RDS (3-7 December 2014). The FSAI operates an Advice Line on 1890 33 66 77 from 9.00am-5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Did you know… Fyffes plc has purchased 3,000,000 ordinary shares at €0.06 each in the issued share capital of the company on the market at a price of €1.00 per share on the 11 December 2014? The company announced that it bought the shares under the authority granted by shareholders at the previous annual general meeting. The shares bought under this transaction will be held as treasury shares. After this transaction, Fyffes plc has 294,659,807 ordinary shares, excluding the 31,075,000 now held as treasury shares.
