FSAI Served Eight Closure Orders On Food Businesses In June

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland has reported that eight Closure Orders, two Prohibition Orders and one Improvement Order were served on food businesses during the month of June for breaches of food safety legislation.

Three of the eight closure orders were served under the FSAI Act, 1998. These included manufacturing and packaging company Lebanese Kitchen of Blanchardstown(was also served a prohibition order under the same act); Son of a Bun restaurant on McCurtain Street in Cork, and The Holy Grail Restaurant on Market Square in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford.

The other five closure orders were served under EC (Official Control Of Foodstuffs) Regulations, 2010. These closures included Bingo Polish Market(whose meat and deli sections were shut down) in Arklow, Co. Wicklow; New Dynasty Chinese Takeaway in Clarecastle, Co. Clare; New Yaadgar restaurant in Tullamore, Co. Offaly; The New Leaf restaurant in Tallaght, and Piece of Cake food stall in Dublin's Meeting House square was also ordered to cease the storage of foodstuffs.

Elsewhere, Gamells restaurant in Ranelagh was served a Prohibition Order, Express Pizza on Lord Edward Street in Limerick was served an Improvement Order and also a successful prosecution was carried out on Keelaghan Wholesale Meats Ltd in Ashbourne, Co. Meath.

Chief executive of the FSAI, Pamela Byrne, commented; “By law, food businesses should at all times produce or serve food that is safe to eat. This is only achieved through continuous review of food safety practices and standards to ensure adherence to current legislation. Negligent practices cannot and will not be tolerated.

"The onus is on every food business to have a food safety management system in place, which assists in identifying and controlling hazards that could pose a danger in the preparation of safe food.”
