Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Simon Coveney has announced details of his Department’s 2016 budget, including news of an overall increase of €109 million, which will allow for ‘targeted investment in the Rural Development and Seafood Development programmes’. Minister Coveney commented, “In this Budget I wanted to set out clear priorities in order to maximise the contribution of the agri-food, marine and forestry to the national economy.”

Pallas Foods has been named the Best Catering Supplier at the 2015 National Hospitality Awards, which took place yesterday at the InterContinental Hotel, Dublin. Keelings took the award for Best Catering Supplier (Specialist), while Counterpoint Ireland was named Best Drinks Supplier. The event, held in association with Hospitality Ireland magazine, saw  some of the most prominent names in hospitality address a packed audience, including Dalata CEO Pat McCann and Alexander Goransson, lead analyst at Euromonitor.

Dawn Meats has launched its first Health Week at it plants nationwide, as part of its ‘Work Safe, Think Safe’ initiative. The week will see employees provided with information to help them make informed decisions on health and lifestyle for themselves and their families. The main theme of the week is heart health, with each day focussing on a specific element, from exercise and healthy eating, to diabetes awareness and the effects of smoking and alcohol on heart health.

GSK is looking drive sales of its Oilatum Range with a new marketing message that reads it is ‘clinically proven to significantly reduce itching for up to eight hours’, following research carried out with some 450 UK mums.  87% of mums interviewed agreed that Oilatum soothes their child’s skin, with 88% choosing to continue to use the cream after the study ended.

UCC is celebrating 200 years since the birth of its first Professor of Maths, George Boole, with food and culinary historian Regina Sexton adapting a recipe from an unpublished 19th century cookbook in his name. The ‘College Pudding’ has been given an update and renamed the ‘George Boole Pudding’ and is now being served at formal UCC dinners. It is described as a nice alternative to a Christmas pudding.

The Blackpool Shopping Centre has welcomed three new retailers with Dealz, CeX and Trespass all taking up units in the Cork City development. According to The Irish Times, Sharon Walsh of letting agents HWBC says the new tenants will add to the excellent mix of stores in the shopping centre, which already includes a Dunnes Stores and Aldi.
