Lidl Ireland Welcomes Planning Permission for Knocknacarra Store

Lidl Ireland has welcomed the decision from An Bord Pleanála to grant planning permission for their development in Knocknacarra which will see the retailer bring their products to a larger number of Galway City customers by spring 2022.

The retailer has worked closely with architects and planners to arrive at a solution that An Bord Pleanála agrees will contribute positively to the Knocknacarra area.

Local Investment

Lidl’s development in Knocknacarra will see a significant local investment as well as the creation of up to 30 permanent new jobs once the store opens. As such, the retailer hopes the local community will see no delays in getting construction underway with the creation of 50 full-time construction jobs for a year.

The planned store will incorporate a range of sustainability features including an ISO 50001 certified Energy Management System, electric vehicle charger spaces, and a solar panel system.

Conor Nagle, Regional Director, Lidl Ireland commented: “Following our recent successful new store opening in Wellpark, we are delighted to have the opportunity to expand our Galway City portfolio even further with Knocknacarra. I’d like to thank An Bord Pleanála and Galway City Council for their ongoing support in helping us invest significantly in the Galway City area by enabling us to create new local jobs and continue to deliver the highest quality products at the best prices to our loyal Galway customers.

Nagle also wanted "to give a special thanks to the people of Galway for their support throughout the planning process. All the well wishes, positivity and excitement about the new store we’ve seen has made us feel very welcome already in the Knocknacarra area! We hope our investment in Galway City doesn’t stop here with plans to add an additional two stores to our Galway City portfolio in the coming years.”

Alongside the new store, the development in Knocknacarra will also have an opportunity for a café operator and three other retail units which the retailer is seeking expressions of interest for.
