Spar Ireland introduced a competition winner to Irish record-breaking athlete Israel Olatunde and 4x400m European Athletics Championship gold medallist Rhasidat Adeleke.
As a sponsor of the European Athletics Championships, the retailer enabled the meeting through its ‘Spar Rome Comforts’ competition.
Lousie Cuddy, with her brother Donal, experienced a special meet-and-greet with the Irish athletes at the Stadio Olimpico, in Rome, over the weekend.
The meeting was part of a three-day VIP fan experience at the 2024 European Athletics Championships.
The consumer competition delivered over 2.6 million plays on TikTok, calling on the Irish public to show why Irish fans are the best in the world.
It called on entrants to do this by sending messages of support to Olatunde and Adeleke.
In her winning entry, Cuddy shared, “I fell in love with athletics as a child 30 years ago, watching Sonia [O’Sullivan] win European gold.
“I’m so excited and emotional now watching this generation of Irish athletes with my son.
“Rhasidat and Israel and all the team, you’re taking the sport to new levels!”
Cuddy concluded the message by saying, “Wishing you so much luck in Rome and Paris, and thanks for all the enjoyment!”
Speaking about the competition, Spar’s sales director, Colin Donnelly, said, “As an organisation with 28 years of supporting European and Irish athletics, we know that even the best individual performances are built on support and teamwork.
“Along with my 14,000 Spar colleagues, I would like to congratulate the gold-medal winners so far in Rome – in particular, Rhasidat, who has been a wonderful ambassador for our campaign – as well as the entire Irish team for their outstanding performances.”
