UK's Truck Deal Doesn't Remedy The Delays And Costs Of Brexit, FTAI

The Freight Transport Association Ireland (FTAI) has said that the UK signing up for the Common Transit Convention is not a remedy for the troubles of Brexit.

As reported by the Irish Examiner, the UK signed up to the agreement that will allow Irish trucks transporting goods to the continent travel freely on British roads.

Despite being welcome news, FTAI said the convention doesn’t lift all the threats of delays and restrictions.

No 'Panacea'

“This is important for a no-deal scenario, particularly for the landbridge. It is not a panacea because there are certain requirements for bonding and restrictions” covering trucks’ final destinations under the convention,” FTAI general manager Aidan Flynn said.

He said despite the agreement opening the landbridge for Irish goods such as agri-foods, truckers will still face increased costs.

According to Brian Keegan, director of public policy and taxation at Chartered Accountants Ireland said that the convention offers opportunities for Irish businesses.

“Many Irish businesses will have scope to gain from Brexit given our close proximity to the UK. Some Northern Irish businesses, particularly in the food industry, could see opportunities for sales into Britain,” he said.
