The 2017 Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby, takes place on Tuesday 31 January 2017 at The Round Room, The Mansion House, Dublin 2. Below is a running order for the day.

8.15am - Registration

9.05am - Mike Watkins, Head of Retailer & Business Insight, Nielsen
Title Of Presentation: The Retail Landscape - What's Next?

Mike Watkins is Head of Retailer and Business and Insight for Nielsen UK and is responsible for commercial development with food, non food and e commerce retailers. He is also a member of the Nielsen Global Thought Leadership team. Before talking on this role he was Senior Manager for Retailer Services at Nielsen with responsibility for strategic planning, and for leading consultancy projects in food retailing in UK and Europe.

9.35am - Frank Gleeson, Region Managing Director and COO, Aramark Northern Europe
Title Of Presentation: The Importance Of Diversification And Innovation

Frank Gleeson is Region Managing Director and COO at Aramark Northern Europe, a renowned leader in facilities management that has recently branched out into B2C operations, with the purchase of the food, clothing and homeware company Avoca, and a partnership with salad bar firm Chopped; the discussion topic of his presentation.

10.05am - Aoife Moran, Client Solutions Manager, FMCG, and Antonia Mc Taggart, Client Solutions Manager, Facebook
Title Of Presentation: The Evolution of Communication

In this presentation, Aoife Moran, Client Solutions Manager, FMCG, and Antonia Mc Taggart, Client Solutions Manager, Facebook will examine how very branding opportunity is a selling opportunity and vice-versa, particularly when it comes to the online space. As they will explore, the tools that businesses have for brand-building and for selling are merging, and brands and retailers need to collaborate fast before they lose out to pure ecommerce businesses.

10.35am - Michael Carey, Managing Director, East Coast Bakehouse
Title Of Presentation: ‘Start-Up Opportunities…..First Survive, Then Thrive’

Michael Carey is Chairman and Managing Director of ‘East Coast Bakehouse’, Ireland’s only commercial-scale biscuit producer. He is also co-founder and Chairman of ‘The Company of Food’, a specialist food investment business, holding investments in a number of private and publicly quoted food businesses. At the Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby, he will be examining how small to medium sized businesses can get a foothold in the often cut-throat retail environment.

11.30am - Joe Barrett, COO, Applegreen plc
Title Of Presentation: The Applegreen Story - Risk and Rewards

Joe Barrett joined Applegreen in its second year of operation, boasting a strong background in retail and fast moving consumer goods at companies such as Tesco and John West Foods. Barrett has over 20 years’ experience in the retail industry and holds a key responsibility for management and developing the Group’s retail and food offerings. At the Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby, he will give his take on the challenges of establishing a retail brand, and the importance of seizing opportunities as and when they occur.

12.00pm - Vicky Bullen, Chief Executive, Coley Porter Bell
Title: Creating Retail Brands that Seduce the Subconscious and Convince the Conscious

Vicky Bullen is Chief Executive of Coley Porter Bell, one of the UK’s leading strategic brand design consultancies, which is part of the Ogilvy & Mather and WPP agencies. At the Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby, Vicky will explore how brands need to tap into the subconscious decisions of shoppers in order to ensure that they are chosen over their competitors.

12.30pm -  Dalton Philips, Senior Advisor, Boston Consulting Group/Former CEO, Morrisons plc
Title Of Presentation: Disruption in Grocery - Is The Worst Of It Now Over?

Dalton Philips is a Senior Advisor to the Boston Consulting Group and a well-known figure in retail circles, having recently headed up Morrisons plc, the UK’s fourth biggest grocer, as well as holding the roles of COO at Canada’s Loblaw’s, CEO of Brown Thomas and a myriad of positions with Walmart in Germany, Brazil and the US. At the Checkout Conference, he will turn his attention to the battle for market share in the UK grocery business and examine how Ireland’s retailers and suppliers may be affected by goings on across the Irish Sea.

AFTERNOON SESSION

2.30pm - Robert Clarke, Director, Empathy Research
Title Of Presentation: Healthy Living - Are We Really Buying It?

In this special presentation, Robert Clarke, Director of Empathy Research will present exclusive data on how wider trends relating to healthy eating impact on shopping and consumption behaviour of the Irish adult population, ultimately understanding how this changing food culture can become the building blocks to allow retailers thrive. This presentation will also feature input from leading industry representatives.

3.15pm - Tobias Wasmuht, Managing Director, SPAR International
Title Of Presentation: Better Together

Tobias Wasmuht was unveiled as the new Managing Director of SPAR International in January 2016, having previously held the roles of Retail & Marketing Director at SPAR International and Managing Director of SPAR China. At the Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby, Tobias will be examining how retail businesses need to think globally but act locally, looking at how innovation often transcends boundaries in the retail environment.

EVENT MC: COLETTE FITZPATRICK

Colette Fitzpatrick has been working in television and radio for two decades, and currently co-presents Newstalk Breakfast on weekday mornings, alongside Shane Coleman, Paul Williams and Alan Quinlan, as well as co-hosting Pat Kenny Tonight on TV3. Hailing from Tipperary, she is regarded as one of the leading news broadcasters in the country, and Checkout is delighted to welcome her to MC the 2017 Checkout Conference, in association with dunnhumby.
