PG Tips Announces 100% Biodegradable Tea Bags
British tea brand PG Tips has announced it will introduce 100% biodegradable tea bags in the course of 2018.
As an initial trial, the new bags will be sealed with new material made from corn starch that is 100% plant-based, fully biodegradable and 100% renewable, according to the company.
Currently, PG Tips bags are made mostly with paper and a small amount of polypropylene to seal the bag, which isn't biodegradable.
The biodegradable bags will break down under the right environmental conditions. PG Tips tea drinkers can either discard the bags in their food waste recycling collection or pop them into their home composter.
However, the climate in the UK and Ireland means that it can take a long time to break down, so the company advise that customers may want to sieve out the leftover part of their teabag and discard it or dig it in with the compost.
The brand previously was the first major UK tea brand to sell fully Rainforest Alliance certified black and green teas.
