Newcastle West SuperValu Set To Close

The Garvey Group has announced the closure its SuperValu store in Newcastle West in Limerick, which will see the loss of 45 jobs, the Irish Examiner reports.

A statement on behalf of the Garvey Group, which also operates a Centra in the town, explained the store will cease trading on the 25th of April “due to difficult trading conditions."

The statement added that; “A redundancy package, along with CV and interview training, will be offered to all staff. They will also be informed of potential redeployment options within the Garvey Group.”

The shop employs 11 full-time members of staff, with 34 further staff on part-time contracts and is considered one of the largest employers in the town.

Fianna Fáil councillor for the area, Michael Collins commented; “It's a huge blow to the staff, the management, and the company itself. You'd have to take time out to think of the local suppliers that feed into Garveys as well.”

However, he added that; “I just want to acknowledge that Garvey's Supervalu and the management of the shop have been very supportive of local sporting organisations and charities through sponsorship and have been a lot better than other businesses in the area.”
