63% Of Irish Adults Holidaying Abroad This Year

Despite the recent ‘heatwave’, almost two-thirds (63%) of Irish adults will be holidaying abroad this year according to a new survey by Empathy Research. Of 992 participants, Dubliners are the most likely (74%) to be flying abroad for their summer holidays this year. Other regions were shown to be slightly less likely to holiday abroad; rest of Leinster (64%), Connacht/Ulster (60%) and Munster (52%).

Unsurprisingly Irish adults without children appear more likely (67%) to be travelling abroad for their holidays compared to those with children (54%), showing that family budget expenses are still a factor in the choice of holidays.

Just over half (54%) of Irish adults plan to stay closer to home and will holiday in Ireland this summer, while 11% won’t be going on holidays this summer indicating that some sectors of society are still finding it difficult to budget for the non-essentials.

When asked about what type of accommodation they will choose when holidaying in Ireland, 59% said a hotel, while 26% will stay in self-catering accommodation. Of those choosing hotels, the younger age groups were the least likely to stay in hotels while on holidays in Ireland; under 35 (53%), 35-44 (56%), 45-54 (59%) and 55+ (66%). People without children (64%) are more likely to be staying in a hotel during their holidays compared to those with children (50%) possible as a result of having more discretionary income.

For those choosing to holiday in Ireland and stay in self-catering accommodation, almost two-thirds (63%) plan on buying their groceries when they arrive at their final location. More men than women were of this opinion (73% vs. 55%) as well as participants with children (69% vs. 57% no children).

Meanwhile over a third (37%) plan on buying their groceries before they go. Women (45%) are more likely to buy their groceries before they go on their holiday than men (27%).
